Know-How: Incorporating Colour into Your Home

After many years of seeing all white homes, we’re seeing a transition towards more colourful spaces. Adding colour tastefully can be a daunting task and requires some balancing. We love starting with a neutral base and then adding colour in. Here are a few of our favourite ways to add colour into your home.

CABINETRY

Cabinetry is one of our favourite ways of incorporating colour into a home. While we tend to gravitate towards more neutral kitchens, we’re big believers in adding coloured cabinetry into rooms like the laundry room, mudroom, office and bathroom. We like to opt for colours that are a bit more subdued. If you follow our work, you probably know we love green and blue hues.

WALLPAPER

Wallpaper is a fun way of adding colour to a room. We especially love adding wallpaper into spaces like powder rooms. It’s an easy way to add colour without too much commitment. A wallpapered accent wall in a bedroom is also a fun way to add personality to a room.

PAINT

Paint is a relatively cost-effective way to add colour to a space. You’ll often see us adding a moody paint colour to rooms like the dining room, bedroom or home office. When picking paint colours, we recommend avoiding primary colours. If you are stumped on what paint colour to pick, a good tip is to look at your wardrobe…the colours that you wear daily can usually be a good indicator of what colours you might feel comfortable with seeing in your home every day.

FURNITURE & RUGS

If you are nervous to commit to colour on your walls, add it through furniture, rugs or accessories. Our favourite way to add colour in furniture is with a bold accent chair. Accent chairs are less of a commitment than a sofa and can add a sense of interest to a room. Blue and green hues are usually a safe bet and look good with many different design styles. Rugs are another way to add colour. They can set the tone for a whole room and can give you the flexibility to pull different colours from it.
